"These paintings are based on a comedy "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes, written in the 5th cent. BC in Athens. The plot involves a conspiracy among the women of various warring Greek city-states to force a halt to the war by refusing to have sex with the men until they declare a peace. I did this work early this year, and I am amazed at how little it speaks to 9/11. That highlights the differences of this war compared to anything we've faced before. |

Anyway, the scrawled text on most of the Lysistrata paintings is the ancient Greek, the particular lines of the play to which the title (line numbers) and the image refers. The original play is quite graphic and bawdy; believe it or not, these paintings are toned down from what the text describes." ~Angie Reed Garner
